Lorde What Was That Single Marks a Bold New Era for the Pop Star

Lorde What Was That

Lorde has returned with a powerful new track titled What Was That, and fans are buzzing. The single dropped just 12 hours after its announcement. This release marks her first new music since her 2021 album, Solar Power.

Unlike Solar Power, the Lorde What Was That single echoes the emotional intensity of her 2018 album Melodrama. Co-produced with Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro, the song explores fresh themes while revisiting her classic sound. It blends ethereal vocals with pulsating beats for a mesmerizing result.

On April 22, Lorde surprised fans with a pop-up event in New York City’s Washington Square Park. She invited fans with a cryptic message: “Meet me in the park.” The event, however, was cut short by local authorities due to permit issues.

Despite the disruption, loyal fans who stayed were treated to something special. Lorde didn’t perform live but danced to the single as Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) played it over speakers. Her presence and energy made it a memorable moment.

Footage from the event appears in the official video for What Was That. The visuals include scenes of Lorde across various New York City locations. It adds an authentic and intimate feel to the single’s release. Her styling in the video reflects a new aesthetic direction, hinting at more surprises ahead.

Leading up to the drop, Lorde used TikTok to tease her return. She posted a debut video and later sent voice memos to fans. In one, she said, “These are the last moments where it’s just us… I’m so ready.”

The Lorde What Was That single is now streaming everywhere. With its captivating sound and spontaneous launch, it marks the beginning of a bold new chapter. Fans can only wonder what surprises she has planned next. This is truly a moment worth watching in modern pop.
