The upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, will now release on April 24, 2026. Lionsgate and Universal Pictures moved its debut from October 2025 due to extensive post-production needs. Deadline first reported the delay after principal photography wrapped in May 2024.
Director Antoine Fuqua is overseeing reshoots and edits. Insiders revealed discussions about splitting Michael into two parts. The $155 million film spans Jackson’s entire life, from childhood to his global superstardom.
John Logan’s screenplay explores Jackson’s upbringing under Joe and Katherine Jackson and his solo rise. Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, plays the King of Pop. The cast includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson.
It also stars Miles Teller as attorney John Branca and Larenz Tate as Berry Gordy. Other cast members include Kat Graham as Diana Ross, Laura Harrier as Suzanne de Passe, and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones. Liv Symone plays Gladys Knight, while Jessica Sula portrays La Toya Jackson.
Oscar-winning producer Graham King leads the project. His team secured rights to many of Jackson’s iconic songs. Negotiations with Jackson’s estate and publishers ensured authentic recreations of his live performances.
King shared, “I’m so honored to tell Michael’s story. It’s been a long journey.” Lionsgate Chair Adam Fogelson added, “Michael Jackson was inarguably one of the greatest entertainers of all time.”
Universal will distribute Michael internationally, except in Japan, where Kino Films holds rights. Lionsgate will handle domestic releases. As the new release approaches, fans can expect teasers and behind-the-scenes features. These will highlight Jaafar Jackson’s transformation and recreations of Jackson’s legendary shows.
Ultimately, Michael promises a deep, cinematic look into the life and music of a global icon.
